Question 67 of 103 in The Periodic Table

Metals and non-metals in the periodic table

3 marks · Normal

Explain why the elements in Group 0 (the noble gases) are very unreactive. Your answer should refer to electronic structure.

Work this out on paper, then compare with the answer and worked solution below. With a free account you can submit written answers for marking.

Show answer

Noble gases have full outer shells of electrons, so they have no tendency to gain, lose or share electrons. This makes them chemically unreactive.

Also accept: Outer shell is stable, does not react

Common mistakes: Saying 'because they are gases'; Confusing full outer shell with having eight electrons only (not all do: helium)

Marking points

M1 · 1 mark · Refers to full outer electron shell or stable electronic configuration

M1 · 1 mark · States no tendency to gain, lose or share electrons

A1 · 1 mark · Links full shell to lack of chemical reactivity/inertness

Worked solution

Group 0 elements (noble gases) have a full outer shell of electrons. Because their outer shell is full, they do not tend to gain, lose or share electrons. This makes them very stable and unreactive (inert).
