Marking points

B1 · 1 mark · Describes the structure as a giant lattice of positive and negative ions.

B2 · 1 mark · Links strong electrostatic attractions between ions to a high melting point (lots of energy required).

Worked solution

A giant ionic compound has a regular lattice of positive and negative ions.

The strong electrostatic forces between the ions mean that a lot of energy is needed to break the lattice, so it has a high melting point.
