Marking points

B1 · 1 mark · Describes, in context, an essential setting-up step (e.g. placing test tubes over electrodes with sodium chloride solution inside, electrodes in correct positions, etc.)

B2 · 1 mark · Mentions a key safety measure (e.g. carrying out in a fume cupboard or wearing eye protection) relevant to the apparatus setup

Worked solution

1. Place a test tube containing sodium chloride solution over each electrode, making sure not to cover the electrodes completely to allow ion flow.

2. Set up the electrolysis in a fume cupboard or well-ventilated area and wear eye protection to protect against chlorine gas exposure.
