Question 306 of 991 in Principles of Chemistry

Drawing diagrams of electronic configurations

2 marks · Easy

An atom has atomic number 6. Calculate the number of electrons in each shell and write its electronic configuration.

Work this out on paper, then compare with the answer and worked solution below. With a free account you can submit written answers for marking.

Show answer

2, 4

Also accept: First shell = 2, second shell = 4

Common mistakes: Wrong split (e.g., 3,3)

Marking points

M1 · 1 mark · States correct split of electrons in shells (first 2, rest 4 in second shell).

A1 · 1 mark · Gives final electronic configuration: 2, 4. (follow-through)

Worked solution

First shell: can hold 2 electrons. So put 2 in first shell. Total is 6, so 4 left for second shell. Electronic configuration is 2, 4.
