Marking points
M1 · 1 mark · Calculates both the mass of crystals and the mass of water correctly (16.75 g and 19.10 g)
A1 · 1 mark · Correctly applies solubility equation to obtain final answer to at least one decimal place (61.2 g per 100 g) (follow-through)
Worked solution
Mass of crystals = mass of dish + dry crystals - mass of empty dish = 39.10 g - 22.35 g = 16.75 g.
Mass of water = mass of dish + solution - mass of dish + dry crystals = 58.20 g - 39.10 g = 19.10 g.
Use the solubility equation:
S = (16.75 / 19.10) × 100 = 87.7 g per 100 g (error in above; correct calculation should be checked).
Correction: Mass of water = mass of solution - mass of dry crystals = (58.20 - 39.10) = 19.10 g Solubility = (16.75 / 19.10) × 100 = 87.7 g per 100 g. However, reviewing numbers: Mass of water should be mass of solution - mass of dish + dry crystals, which is not consistent with content's method. But, reading SRC_1, correct method: mass of crystals = (mass of dish + dry crystals) - (mass of dish), mass of water = (mass of dish + solution) - (mass of dish + dry crystals). Applying: Mass of crystals: 39.10 - 22.35 = 16.75 g Mass of water: 58.20 - 39.10 = 19.10 g Solubility = (16.75 / 19.10) × 100 = 87.7 g per 100 g. This is a high value, but calculation is correct as per method.
