Metals and non-metals in the periodic table
5 marks · HardThe periodic table below shows four elements, X, Y, Z, and W.
| Element | Group | Period | Formula of oxide |
|---|---|---|---|
| X | 1 | 3 | XO |
| Y | 7 | 3 | Y2O7 |
| Z | 2 | 2 | ZO |
| W | 6 | 3 | WO3 |
Which two elements in the table are metals? Give a reason for your choice.
Which one element forms an acidic oxide? Explain your answer.
State one property (other than oxide character) that most metals have which non-metals do not.

Show answer
(a) X and Z are metals. They are in Groups 1 and 2, which are metal groups. · must show X and Z identified as the metals, Group number link to metal status
(b) W forms an acidic oxide because it is in Group 6, a non-metal group. · must show W identified as forming acidic oxide, Correct reasoning using group 6/non-metal/periodic table
(c) Metals are good conductors of electricity. · must show A property of metals not found in non-metals (e.g. electrical conductivity, malleability, ductility, lustre)

Marking points
M1 (a) · 1 mark · Identifies both X and Z as metals (Group 1 and Group 2).
M2 (a) · 1 mark · Gives a correct reason: in Groups 1 and 2, which are metals in the periodic table.
M3 (b) · 1 mark · Identifies W as forming an acidic oxide.
M4 (b) · 1 mark · Explains W is from Group 6 (a non-metal group/right side of the periodic table) or links to acid oxide property.
M5 (c) · 1 mark · States a correct property that metals have but non-metals do not (e.g. conduct electricity, malleable, ductile, shiny/lustrous).
Worked solution
a) X and Z are metals. They are in Groups 1 and 2 of the periodic table, which contain metals.
b) W forms an acidic oxide. W is in Group 6, which is on the right side of the periodic table where non-metals are found, and their oxides are usually acidic.
c) One property most metals have that non-metals do not is that they conduct electricity.
