Displacement reactions involving metal oxides
4 marks · NormalThe table shows the results when three metals are mixed with the oxides of the others and heated.
| Mixture | Reaction observed? |
|---|---|
| Metal X + oxide of Y | Yes |
| Metal Y + oxide of Z | No |
| Metal Z + oxide of X | No |
| Metal Y + oxide of X | No |
| Metal Z + oxide of Y | Yes |
Which metal is the most reactive? Explain your reasoning.
Which metal is the least reactive? Explain your answer.
Work this out on paper, then compare with the answer and worked solution below. With a free account you can submit written answers for marking.
Show answer
(a) X is the most reactive because it can displace another metal (Y) from its oxide but is not displaced by others.
(b) Y is the least reactive because neither X nor Z is displaced by Y from their oxides, and Y's oxide is displaced by both other metals.
Must show: Uses table evidence, Correct logical reasoning
Common mistakes: Misreading which means more reactive; Concluding based only on count of reactions

Marking points
M1 (a) · 1 mark · Correctly identifies X as most reactive.
A1 (a) · 1 mark · Supports choice with valid reason based on the data (displaces, not displaced).
M2 (b) · 1 mark · Correctly identifies Y as least reactive.
A2 (b) · 1 mark · Gives clear explanation referring to outcomes of attempted displacements.
Worked solution
a) X is the most reactive because it can react with Y's oxide (so X displaces Y) and is not displaced by Y or Z.
b) Y is the least reactive since its oxide is displaced by both X and Z but it can't displace either of the others from their oxides.
