Marking points

B1 · 1 mark · States that kerosene is used as a fuel for jet aircraft / aviation fuel.

B2 · 1 mark · States that kerosene is used as domestic heating oil OR as 'paraffin' for small heaters/lamps.

B3 · 1 mark · Provides a brief explanation for each use, e.g. suitable boiling point, burns cleanly, provides large amount of energy, or safe to handle compared to petrol/other fuels.

Worked solution

1. Kerosene is used as a fuel for jet aircraft because it has a suitable boiling point and provides a large amount of energy.

2. It is used as domestic heating oil because it is safe to store and releases enough heat energy to warm homes.

3. Kerosene is also used as 'paraffin' for small heaters or lamps, as it burns with a clean flame and is convenient for portable heating or lighting.
