Marking points

S1 (a) · 1 mark · Correctly describes four carbons connected in a continuous chain

S2 (a) · 1 mark · Identifies single bonds between C1–C2 and C2–C3, and double bond between C3–C4

S3 (a) · 1 mark · Mentions single covalent bonds to hydrogens on carbon atoms

N2 (b) · 2 marks · Correct IUPAC name: but-1-ene (accept 1-butene)

H1 (c) · 1 mark · Homologous series: alkene; reason: compound contains a carbon–carbon double bond

Worked solution

(a) The compound has four carbons in a straight chain. Carbon 1 is CH3, next is CH2, then CH with a double bond to CH2 at the end. There are single bonds between C1–C2 and C2–C3, a double bond between C3–C4. All remaining bonds are to hydrogen.

(b) The correct IUPAC name is but-1-ene.

(c) It belongs to the alkene homologous series because it has a carbon–carbon double bond.
