Show answer

A hydrogen from the ethanol and a hydroxyl group (OH) from the ethanoic acid are removed to form water.

Also accept: An H atom from the alcohol and an OH group from the acid combine to form H2O.; Hydrogen from ethanol and hydroxyl from ethanoic acid are removed.

Common mistakes: Saying that two hydrogen atoms are removed; Not naming both ethanol and ethanoic acid

Marking points

B1 · 1 mark · Identifies removal of H from ethanol (alcohol) or from the alcohol.

B2 · 1 mark · Identifies removal of OH from ethanoic acid (acid) or from the acid.

Worked solution
