What are catalysts?

4 marks · Normal
(a)

Describe how you would set up an experiment to measure the effect of different solid catalysts on the rate of decomposition of hydrogen peroxide.

[2 marks]
(b)

State one safety precaution you would take when carrying out this experiment.

[1 mark]
(c)

Show answer

(a) Add a measured volume of hydrogen peroxide to a conical flask. Add a known mass of the solid, quickly fit a bung connected to a gas syringe, and measure the volume of oxygen gas produced over a fixed time with each solid catalyst. · must show Hydrogen peroxide in flask, Add solid, Collect and measure gas formed over time

(b) Wear eye protection. · must show Appropriate safety mention

(c) No oxygen gas is produced or the rate is the same as with no catalyst. · must show Stating result shows no catalytic activity

Marking points

M1 (a) · 1 mark · Describes adding solid to hydrogen peroxide in flask and fitting a gas collection system.

M2 (a) · 1 mark · States to measure volume of oxygen evolved over a fixed time.

B1 (b) · 1 mark · Mentions a relevant safety precaution (e.g., eye protection, gloves).

B2 (c) · 1 mark · States that no oxygen would be produced, or rate remains unchanged if not a catalyst.

Worked solution

(a) Add 100 cm³ of hydrogen peroxide to a conical flask. Add 0.20 g of each solid in turn. Quickly put on a bung with a gas syringe attached. Swirl and record oxygen produced at time intervals.

(b) Wear eye protection.

(c) No oxygen would be collected, indicating no catalytic activity.
