Question 8 of 19 in The effect of concentration

The effect of concentration

2 marks · Easy

The reaction below is at equilibrium:

At equilibrium, [Q] is 3.0 mol/dm^3 and [P] is 1.0 mol/dm^3. If 0.5 mol/dm^3 of Q is removed, what will [Q] be after the change is compensated and equilibrium is restored? Assume the system restores [Q] to the original value.

Work this out on paper, then compare with the answer and worked solution below. With a free account you can submit written answers for marking.

Show answer

3.0 mol/dm^3 (±0.1)

Common mistakes: Gives 2.5 mol/dm^3 as final answer

Marking points

M1 · 1 mark · Recognises that the system produces more Q to restore the original [Q].

A1 · 1 mark · Correctly gives [Q] after equilibrium as 3.0 mol/dm^3.

Worked solution

Original [Q] = 3.0 mol/dm³. After removal, [Q] = 2.5 mol/dm³. System reacts to produce 0.5 mol/dm³ Q, restoring [Q] to 3.0 mol/dm³.
