Unit 1
5 marks · NormalA class collects data about their favourite fruit. The results are shown in the table below.
| Fruit | Number of students |
|---|---|
| Apple | 12 |
| Banana | 8 |
| Orange | 6 |
| Grape | 4 |
Write the fraction of students who chose banana as their favourite fruit. Give your answer in its simplest form.
Let the number of students who chose orange be represented by the letter . Write down an algebraic expression for the total number of students who chose apple and orange, using .
Using the values in the table, calculate the total number of students who took part in the survey.

Marking points
M1 (a) · 1 mark · Find total number of students (sum table values)
A1 (a) · 1 mark · Write fraction for banana, simplified to 2/7
B1 (b) · 1 mark · Algebraic expression 12 + x in correct form
M2 (c) · 1 mark · Add 12 + 8 + 6 + 4
A2 (c) · 1 mark · Total is 30
Worked solution
a) Total students: 12 + 8 + 6 + 4 = 30. Number who chose banana = 8. Fraction = 8/30 = 4/15 (if not simplified). But the required answer should be simplest form for correct table, so for 8/30: 8/30 simplifies to 4/15; but as per the full table, correct is 8/30 = 4/15. If 8 chosen banana, 30 total students, so 4/15 is correct.
(But in instructions, if only bananas/oranges included, context should make this clear; from table and instructions above, fraction is 8/30 = 4/15).
b) Apple: 12. Orange: x. So expression is 12 + x.
c) Total = 12 + 8 + 6 + 4 = 30.
