Question 18 of 19 in Shape and Space 1

Shape and Space 1

3 marks · Hard

A kite is a quadrilateral with two distinct pairs of adjacent sides equal. List all the lines of symmetry and describe the order of rotational symmetry for a typical kite.

Work this out on paper, then compare with the answer and worked solution below. With a free account you can submit written answers for marking.

Show answer

One line of symmetry; order of rotational symmetry is 1

Must show: Identifies vertical symmetry through the unequal sides, States order of rotational symmetry is 1 (no rotation < 360° maps to itself)

Also accept: One (longitudinal) line of symmetry; Rotational symmetry of order 1

Common mistakes: Saying 2 lines of symmetry; Claiming rotational symmetry order 2

Marking points

B1 · 1 mark · Correctly states one line of symmetry

B2 · 1 mark · Describes line of symmetry runs through the axis between unequal sides

B3 · 1 mark · States rotational symmetry order is 1

Worked solution

A kite has one line of symmetry. This line divides the kite into two mirror images, passing through the axis with unequal sides.

A kite only maps onto itself after a full 360° rotation, so its order of rotational symmetry is 1.
