Handling Data 1
4 marks · HardThe table shows the number of drinks of each type sold at a café in one day.
| Drink | Number sold |
|---|---|
| Tea | 28 |
| Coffee | 42 |
| Hot chocolate | 14 |
| Smoothie | 16 |
Calculate the percentage of total drinks sold that were coffee.
Draw an accurate bar chart to display this information. Clearly label your axes.
Suggest a suitable average to summarise the number of each drink sold, giving a reason based on the data.
Work this out on paper, then compare with the answer and worked solution below. With a free account you can submit written answers for marking.
Show answer
(a) 42/100 = 42% · must show Calculation of total, Division and multiplication by 100
(b) Bar chart with four bars, heights: 14, 16, 28, 42 or correctly to scale. Labeled axes (Drink, Number Sold). · must show All 4 bars, Axes and labels, Correct heights, Gaps between bars
(c) The mode (most frequent: coffee) is most suitable, because drink sales are for categorical data. · must show States mode, Justifies with categorical/bar chart reasoning
Must show: Accurate axes, spacing, labels, and heights for the bar chart
Also accept: Allow graphical bar chart with heights matching data even if scale is by 2s or 5s
Common mistakes: Summing total wrongly; Omitting bar gaps or axes labels in bar chart

Marking points
M1 (a) · 1 mark · Adds all the drinks properly and calculates coffee as a percentage of the total.
M2 (b) · 1 mark · Bar chart drawn with labelled axes; bars correctly represent drink types and heights; gaps between bars present.
A1 (b) · 1 mark · Heights accurately correct to scale for all bars; axes labels clear.
E1 (c) · 1 mark · Chooses mode, justifies as suitable for categorical data/bar chart context.
Worked solution
a. Total drinks sold: 28 + 42 + 14 + 16 = 100.
b. Draw vertical axis (0–50), horizontal axis has four drinks: Tea, Coffee, Hot chocolate, Smoothie. Coffee bar reaches 42, Tea to 28, Smoothie to 16, Hot chocolate to 14. Each bar separated by a gap. Both axes labelled.
c. The mode is most suitable (coffee, sold 42 times), because categorical data is best summarised by the mode.
