Marking points

B1a (a) · 1 mark · Equation correctly written as y = x^2 + 3.

B1b (b) · 1 mark · States original minimum at (0, 1).

B1c (c) · 1 mark · States new minimum at (0, 3).

Worked solution

a) Translating up by 2 adds 2 to the equation: y = x^2 + 1 + 2 = x^2 + 3.

b) The minimum of y = x^2 + 1 is at x = 0 (vertex). So (0, 1).

c) After translating up by 2: (0, 1 + 2) = (0, 3).
