Distance-time graphs
4 marks · NormalThe table below shows the distance travelled by a cyclist during a short journey:
| Time (s) | Distance (m) |
|---|---|
| 0 | 0 |
| 10 | 24 |
| 20 | 48 |
| 30 | 72 |
| 40 | 96 |
Plot a distance–time graph for the cyclist's journey. Label both axes clearly.
Calculate the average speed of the cyclist over the 40 seconds.

(a) — · must show axes labelled time (s) and distance (m), 5 points plotted accurately, points joined with straight lines or smooth curve if appropriate
(b) 2.4 m/s

Marking points
B1 (a) · 1 mark · Both axes labelled with correct quantities and units.
B2 (a) · 1 mark · All points plotted accurately; points joined appropriately.
M1 (b) · 1 mark · Method shown: average speed = total distance / total time.
A1 (b) · 1 mark · Correct calculation of average speed (2.4 m/s) to 1 decimal place.
Worked solution
a) Plot time on the x-axis (0 to 40 s) and distance on the y-axis (0 to 100 m). Plot each point from the table. Join the points with straight lines (the data suggests constant speed).
b) Average speed = Total distance / Total time = 96 m / 40 s = 2.4 m/s
