Distance-time graphs

2 marks · Normal

Describe one way you could measure the speed of a rolling ball in the laboratory, using equipment available in your school.

Work this out on paper, then compare with the answer and worked solution below. With a free account you can submit written answers for marking.

Show answer

Measure a known distance and use a stopwatch to time how long the ball takes to roll that distance. Calculate speed using v = s / t.

Must show: measure distance with ruler/tape, use stopwatch for time, use v = s/t

Also accept: Mark two points, time the ball between them, calculate speed

Marking points

B1 · 1 mark · Suggests measuring distance with ruler or tape measure.

B2 · 1 mark · Suggests measuring time using stopwatch and calculating speed (v = s / t).

Worked solution

Lay out two markers a set distance apart, measure the distance with a ruler. Use a stopwatch to time the ball from the first to the second marker. Calculate speed = distance / time.
