Question 12 of 18 in Velocity-time graphs

Velocity-time graphs

2 marks · Normal

Explain how you could use a velocity–time graph to determine whether an object is moving with uniform acceleration.

Work this out on paper, then compare with the answer and worked solution below. With a free account you can submit written answers for marking.

Show answer

If the velocity–time graph is a straight line, the acceleration is uniform.

Must show: states line is straight, links straight line to uniform acceleration

Also accept: If the gradient is the same everywhere, the acceleration does not change

Common mistakes: thinking uniform means constant velocity

Marking points

B1 · 1 mark · States that the velocity–time graph is a straight line (not curved).

B2 · 1 mark · Links the straight line to constant/unchanging acceleration.

Worked solution

Check if the velocity–time graph is a straight line. If it is, the object has uniform (constant) acceleration because the gradient does not change.
