Distance-time graphs

2 marks · Easy

Explain why the slope of a distance–time graph represents speed.

Work this out on paper, then compare with the answer and worked solution below. With a free account you can submit written answers for marking.

Show answer

Must show: Slope = change in distance / change in time, Speed = distance / time

Also accept: Speed is the gradient of the graph, which is rise over run.

Common mistakes: Saying only 'the line is steep'; Explaining only what slope means, not connecting to speed

Marking points

B1 · 1 mark · States that the slope (or gradient) is change in distance over change in time.

B1 · 1 mark · States that speed is distance divided by time (or equivalent).

Worked solution

The slope of a distance–time graph is the change in distance divided by the change in time. This is the definition of speed.
