Show answer
(a) Rub a plastic ruler vigorously with a cloth. Bring it close to a small metal object such as a doorknob or tap. In a darkened room, a tiny spark may be seen as the static discharges.
(b) Ensure no flammable materials are nearby, or earth yourself before starting to prevent accidental shocks.

Marking points
M1 (a) · 1 mark · Describes how to charge the plastic and bring it near a metal object.
M2 (a) · 1 mark · Mentions observing or seeing a spark as evidence.
B1 (b) · 2 marks · States appropriate safety precaution (e.g., keeping away from flammable materials or earthing).
Worked solution
(a) Rub a plastic comb or ruler with a wool cloth to build up static charge. Bring the charged object close to a metal tap or another piece of metal; sometimes a small spark is seen, especially in the dark. (b) Keep away from any flammable liquids or gases. Before starting, discharge your own static by touching an earthed metal object.
