Describing waves

2 marks · Normal

State the difference between the direction of vibration of particles in a transverse wave and a longitudinal wave.

Work this out on paper, then compare with the answer and worked solution below. With a free account you can submit written answers for marking.

Show answer

In a transverse wave, particles vibrate at right angles to the direction of wave energy. In a longitudinal wave, particles vibrate along (parallel to) the direction of wave energy.

Also accept: Transverse: vibrations are perpendicular to the direction of energy; Longitudinal: vibrations are parallel to the direction of energy.

Common mistakes: Confusing the directions; Giving examples instead of differences

Marking points

B1 · 1 mark · States 'right angles/perpendicular' for transverse wave.

B2 · 1 mark · States 'along/parallel' for longitudinal wave.

Worked solution

In a transverse wave, the particles vibrate at right angles (perpendicular) to the direction of the wave's energy transfer. In a longitudinal wave, the particles vibrate in the same direction (parallel) as the wave's energy transfer.
