Question 16 of 16 in Wavelength and frequency

Wavelength and frequency

2 marks · Normal

Describe two observations that show how increasing the frequency of a ripple tank motor changes the pattern of waves seen.

Work this out on paper, then compare with the answer and worked solution below. With a free account you can submit written answers for marking.

Show answer

The wavelength of the waves becomes shorter and there are more wavefronts per unit length.

Also accept: Waves become closer together; wave pattern becomes more frequent

Common mistakes: Waves get taller

Marking points

B1 · 1 mark · Correctly states that wavelength decreases/waves are closer together

B2 · 1 mark · Correctly states more waves (wavefronts) appear per unit length, or frequency increases

Worked solution

As frequency increases, (1) the wavelength shortens (waves get closer together), and (2) more wavefronts are visible in the same space.
