Question 108 of 175 in Energy Resources and Energy Transfers

Non-renewable energy resources

3 marks · Normal

A power station burns oil to generate electricity.

(a)

State the sequence of energy transfers, starting from burning oil and ending with electrical energy at the output.

[2 marks]
(b)

State one way in which the efficiency of electricity generation could be improved in such a power station.

[1 mark]

Show answer

(a) Chemical energy in oil → thermal energy (heat) → kinetic energy (turbine) → electrical energy (generator/output).

(b) Use better turbines, reduce energy wasted as heat, or use combined heat and power systems.

Marking points

B1 (a) · 2 marks · 1 mark for mentioning at least two correct energy transfers; 1 mark for complete correct sequence.

B2 (b) · 1 mark · One valid way to improve efficiency stated.

Worked solution

a) Chemical energy in oil is converted to thermal energy (steam), then to kinetic energy (turbine), then to electrical energy (generator output).

b) Efficiency can be improved by using more efficient turbines, reducing energy wasted as heat, or using combined heat and power (CHP) systems.
