Marking points

B1 (a) · 1 mark · Lists suitable apparatus (e.g., two containers, one black and one white, water, thermometers).

M1 (b) · 1 mark · Describes setting up both containers with equal volumes of water, in sunlight.

M2 (b) · 1 mark · Mentions measuring and recording temperature in each container over time.

A1 (c) · 1 mark · States measuring and comparing the temperature change of water in each container.

Worked solution

a) Apparatus: Two containers (one black, one white), water, two thermometers.

b) Fill both containers with the same amount of water. Place both in the same sunny place. Insert a thermometer into each. Measure the temperature of the water in each container at regular time intervals (e.g. every 5 minutes).

c) Measure and compare the temperature increase in each container.
