Question 16 of 16 in Pressure in Liquids and Gases

Pressure in Liquids and Gases

2 marks · Normal

Describe why a submarine must be designed with a strong hull when it dives deep in the ocean, with reference to liquid pressure acting at points on its surface.

Work this out on paper, then compare with the answer and worked solution below. With a free account you can submit written answers for marking.

Show answer

At great depths, the pressure in the water acts equally in all directions on the submarine's surface and becomes very large. The hull must be strong to withstand this high pressure from all sides and prevent collapse.

Common mistakes: Mentions only downward pressure or weight; Forgets about pressure from all sides

Marking points

B1 · 1 mark · Mentions high liquid pressure at depth acts equally in all directions on surface.

B2 · 1 mark · Explains strong hull prevents collapse from high pressure.

Worked solution

A submarine experiences high pressure in the water at great depth. This pressure pushes equally in all directions at every point on its hull. To prevent the submarine from being crushed by this enormous force, the hull must be strong enough to withstand it.
