Question 14 of 16 in Pressure and Depth

Pressure and Depth

3 marks · Normal

Describe an experiment to show that the pressure in a liquid increases with depth. Your answer should include the apparatus needed and how you would take measurements to show the pattern.

Work this out on paper, then compare with the answer and worked solution below. With a free account you can submit written answers for marking.

Show answer

Must show: description of apparatus (e.g., tall cylinder + pressure gauge), measurement of pressure at different depths, observation that pressure increases with depth

Also accept: use of manometer/bourdon gauge

Common mistakes: not stating depth-measurements taken; omitting what is observed

Marking points

B1 · 1 mark · Describes appropriate apparatus setup (e.g., tall tank of liquid + pressure sensor).

B2 · 1 mark · Mentions taking measurements of pressure at different depths.

B3 · 1 mark · States or describes that results show pressure increases with depth.

Worked solution

Set up a tall, transparent container filled with water, and use a pressure gauge or manometer to measure the pressure at various depths. Take readings at the surface, half-depth, and near the bottom. The readings will show higher pressure at greater depths, demonstrating that pressure increases with depth.
