Measuring heat energy

3 marks · Normal

Describe one practical method to measure the specific heat capacity of a metal block in the laboratory. Outline at least three key steps.

Work this out on paper, then compare with the answer and worked solution below. With a free account you can submit written answers for marking.

Show answer

1. Measure the mass of the metal block. 2. Insert a thermometer and heater into the block. 3. Supply a known amount of energy (using an electric heater and timer), record the temperature rise, and use to calculate specific heat capacity.

Must show: measure mass, supply known energy, measure temperature rise

Also accept: Use of water or other methods provided mass, energy input and temperature change are included

Common mistakes: Forgetting to measure mass; Not mentioning energy supplied

Marking points

M1 · 1 mark · Measure the mass of the metal block.

M2 · 1 mark · Supply known energy input to the block (e.g. electric heater with time and voltage/current measured).

M3 · 1 mark · Measure temperature change using a thermometer.

Worked solution

You can measure the mass of a clean, dry metal block. Insert an electric heater and thermometer into holes in the block. Record the starting temperature, then supply energy (using a measured current and voltage for a set time). Record the temperature rise. Use the data with to find the specific heat capacity.
