Properties of the different states of matter
3 marks · Normal| State | How close are particles? | Easily compressed? |
|---|---|---|
| Solid | Very close together | No |
| Liquid | Very close together | No |
| Gas | Far apart | Yes |

Marking points
M1 · 1 mark · Mentions that solids and liquids have closely packed particles so cannot be compressed.
M2 · 1 mark · Mentions that gases have particles far apart.
A1 · 1 mark · Explains gases are compressible because their particles can be forced closer together.
Worked solution
Solids and liquids have their particles very close together, so there is little or no space to push the particles closer. Therefore, they cannot be compressed. Gases have particles far apart, so they can be compressed easily as their particles can be pushed closer together.
