Marking points

M1 · 1 mark · Describes bringing a magnet close to the metal bar

B1 · 1 mark · States observation: if the magnet attracts the metal, it is magnetic

B1 · 1 mark · States control: if it does not attract, the bar is non-magnetic

Worked solution

Bring a bar magnet near the unknown metal bar. If the bar is attracted to the magnet, then it is made of a magnetic material such as iron, steel, nickel, or cobalt. If there is no attraction, then it is non-magnetic.
