Question 11 of 16 in Creating a uniform magnetic field

Creating a uniform magnetic field

4 marks · Normal

The apparatus below shows two bar magnets:

Geometry diagram with points N, S, N, SNSNS
Bar magnets set up for field observation

Draw on the diagram the pattern of magnetic field lines in the region between the north pole of magnet 1 and the south pole of magnet 2. Label the direction of the field.

Work this out on paper, then compare with the answer and worked solution below. With a free account you can submit written answers for marking.

Show answer

Must show: At least 3 straight, parallel and evenly spaced lines between N of magnet 1 and S of magnet 2, Arrows showing direction from N to S between the poles

Also accept: More than 3 correct lines or all lines clearly parallel and straight

Common mistakes: Curved/splayed lines; Lines joining like poles; No arrows

Marking points

D1 · 2 marks · Draws at least 3 straight, parallel and evenly spaced lines between N of magnet 1 and S of magnet 2.

D2 · 1 mark · Correctly shows arrows pointing from N to S between the magnets.

D3 · 1 mark · No unnecessary field lines (e.g., none between N–N or S–S poles); neatness and clarity of lines.

Worked solution

(Student diagram should show at least 3 straight, parallel lines between the opposing poles, all arrows pointing from the north to the south pole. No lines should connect like poles.)
