Induced magnetism

3 marks · Normal

An iron nail is placed near the north pole of a bar magnet.

(a)

State what happens to the iron nail when it is placed near the north pole of the bar magnet.

[1 mark]
(b)

Explain why the end of the nail nearest the magnet becomes magnetised, and state its polarity.

Show answer

(a) It becomes magnetised.

(b) The magnetic field of the bar magnet induces magnetism in the nail, making the end nearest the north pole a south pole.

Marking points

B1 (a) · 1 mark · States that the nail becomes magnetised.

M1 (b) · 1 mark · Explains magnetism is induced by the magnet's field.

A1 (b) · 1 mark · Correctly states polarity: the end nearest the north pole becomes a south pole.

Worked solution

a) The iron nail becomes magnetised when placed near the north pole of the bar magnet.

b) The magnetic field from the bar magnet causes magnetism to be induced in the iron nail. The end of the nail closest to the magnet becomes a south pole (opposite to the nearby north pole), so that attraction occurs.
