Question 14 of 16 in Induced magnetism

Induced magnetism

3 marks · Normal

Describe an experiment you could carry out to demonstrate that magnetism can be induced in a piece of iron. Include the apparatus you would use, the method, and the expected result.

Work this out on paper, then compare with the answer and worked solution below. With a free account you can submit written answers for marking.

Show answer

Place an iron nail near a bar magnet. Use paper clips or iron filings to detect magnetism in the nail. The nail will attract the paper clips/iron filings when close to the magnet. When the magnet is removed, the nail loses its magnetism.

Must show: iron nail, bar magnet, detecting induced magnetism

Also accept: Plotting compasses; Iron filings instead of paperclips

Common mistakes: Leaving out the detection step

Marking points

M1 · 1 mark · Correctly names suitable apparatus (e.g., iron nail, bar magnet, paper clips/iron filings/plotting compass).

M2 · 1 mark · Describes bringing the iron nail near the magnet and testing for induced magnetism with paper clips (or other acceptable method).

A1 · 1 mark · States that the iron nail attracts paper clips or filings when magnetism is induced, and loses magnetism when the magnet is removed.

Worked solution

Set up: Use an iron nail and a bar magnet. Bring the nail close to the bar magnet. Test for induced magnetism by seeing if the nail can pick up paper clips (or iron filings stick to it). The nail attracts the paper clips while the magnet is near. Remove the nail from the field — the magnetism disappears.
