ELECTRIC MOTORS AND ELECTROMAGNETIC INDUCTION

3 marks · Normal

You are asked to demonstrate the motor effect using a simple setup in the laboratory.

(a)

List the main components you would need to carry out this demonstration.

[1 mark]
(b)

Describe briefly what you would observe when the experiment is performed correctly.

[1 mark]
(c)

State how you could reverse the direction of movement of the wire.

[1 mark]

Show answer

(a) A piece of wire, a strong magnet, a power supply or battery, and connecting wires. · must show Wire, Magnet, Power supply

(b) The wire will move or jump when the current is switched on. · must show Movement of wire observed

(c) Reverse the direction of the current or reverse the magnetic field. · must show Any one correct way

Must show: Key components listed, Correct simple observation, Correct way to reverse motion

Common mistakes: Omitting either magnet or current-carrying wire in (a); Describing irrelevant observations

Show mark scheme and worked solution

Marking points

B1 (a) · 1 mark · Lists essential components (wire, magnet, power source).

B1 (b) · 1 mark · Describes correct observation: wire moves/jumps.

B1 (c) · 1 mark · States reversing current or field changes wire's direction.

Worked solution

a) You need a wire, a strong magnet, a battery or power supply, and connecting leads.

b) When the current flows, the wire will move or jump sideways, showing the motor effect.

c) Reversing the direction of current or flipping the magnet reverses the direction of movement.
