ELECTROMAGNETIC INDUCTION
3 marks · NormalGenerators are used in power stations to produce electricity for homes and businesses.
Explain, in terms of electromagnetic induction, how a generator can produce electricity. Include what needs to move and why this movement is necessary.
Work this out on paper, then compare with the answer and worked solution below. With a free account you can submit written answers for marking.
Show answer
Must show: Movement needed: either coil or magnet must move, Movement causes field lines to be cut, This induces a voltage (and a current if a complete circuit)
Common mistakes: Not stating the need for movement; Not linking field lines to voltage induction

Marking points
B1 · 1 mark · State that either the coil or the magnet must move
B1 · 1 mark · State that movement causes field lines to be cut
B1 · 1 mark · Explain that this induces a voltage and current (if circuit complete)
Worked solution
Generators produce electricity by moving a coil of wire (or magnet) so that it cuts through magnetic field lines. This motion causes electromagnetic induction, and a voltage is produced across the ends of the coil, resulting in a current if the circuit is complete.
