Question 15 of 15 in ELECTROMAGNETIC INDUCTION

ELECTROMAGNETIC INDUCTION

3 marks · Normal

You are given a coil of wire, a bar magnet, and a sensitive voltmeter.

Describe a practical experiment to show electromagnetic induction and how you would demonstrate that the induced voltage depends on the speed of movement.

(a)

Describe how you would set up the apparatus to show an induced voltage.

[1 mark]
(b)

Describe what you would do to investigate how the induced voltage changes with speed.

[2 marks]

Show answer

(a) — · must show Coil connected to voltmeter, Bar magnet moved in or out of coil

(b) — · must show Vary speed of moving magnet, Measure voltage on voltmeter each time, Comment that faster movement increases voltage

Show mark scheme and worked solution

Marking points

B1 (a) · 1 mark · Describes correct practical setup

B1 (b) · 1 mark · Vary speed of magnet

B1 (b) · 1 mark · Observe and record induced voltage each time or relate speed to voltage

Worked solution

a) Connect the ends of the coil to a sensitive voltmeter. Move the bar magnet quickly in and out of the coil to show a voltage is produced.

b) Repeat the experiment, changing the speed of movement each time (move magnet slowly, then quickly). Measure and record the voltage for each speed. The greater the speed of movement, the larger the induced voltage.
