Question 8 of 15 in GENERATORS

GENERATORS

2 marks · Normal

A straight wire is moved rapidly across a uniform magnetic field. State what is induced in the wire and explain how you could increase the size of this effect.

Work this out on paper, then compare with the answer and worked solution below. With a free account you can submit written answers for marking.

Show answer

A voltage (or current if complete circuit) is induced; the size can be increased by moving the wire faster, increasing the strength of the magnet, or using a coil instead of a single wire.

Also accept: A voltage is induced in the wire; to increase it, move the wire more quickly, use a stronger magnet, or use a coil.

Common mistakes: Just stating 'current is induced' without mentioning voltage or without required explanation; Giving only one factor

Marking points

B1 · 1 mark · States that voltage is induced OR current is induced if circuit is complete

B2 · 1 mark · States any correct way to increase induced voltage (move wire faster, stronger magnet, or use a coil).

Worked solution

A voltage is induced in the wire (a current if there is a complete circuit). The induced voltage can be increased by moving the wire quicker, using a stronger magnet, or replacing the single wire by a coil.
