GENERATORS

3 marks · Normal

Describe an experiment you could do to show how a voltage is induced in a coil when a magnet moves nearby.

(a)

Name the apparatus you would use.

[1 mark]
(b)

Describe how you would carry out the experiment and what you would observe on the measuring instrument.

Show answer

(a) A coil of wire, a bar magnet, a sensitive voltmeter (or galvanometer).

(b) Move the bar magnet into and out of the coil. Observe that the voltmeter (or galvanometer) needle deflects (shows a reading) when the magnet moves, showing a voltage is induced.

Common mistakes: Not naming voltmeter or galvanometer; Not mentioning movement of magnet or what is seen

Marking points

B1 (a) · 1 mark · Names suitable apparatus: coil, bar magnet, voltmeter or galvanometer.

M1 (b) · 1 mark · Describes moving magnet into/out of coil (or coil moves over magnet).

A1 (b) · 1 mark · States that voltmeter/galvanometer shows a reading when magnet moves.

Worked solution

a. Use a coil of wire, a bar magnet, and a sensitive voltmeter or galvanometer. b. Move the bar magnet quickly into and out of the coil. The voltmeter will show a reading (or the galvanometer needle will deflect) while the magnet moves, showing a voltage is induced.
