Show answer
Must show: Rub two insulators together, Pre-check for existing charge, Test by bringing material near small pieces of paper, Observing attraction as evidence of charge
Also accept: Use an electroscope for charge detection
Common mistakes: Not testing for charge before rubbing; Not using insulators

Marking points
M1 · 1 mark · States correct materials (insulators, e.g., plastic rod and cloth).
M1 · 1 mark · Describes checking charge pre-rubbing (with small pieces of paper or electroscope).
M1 · 1 mark · Describes rubbing the materials together to transfer charge.
A1 · 1 mark · Describes testing for charge after rubbing (attraction or electroscope leaf rise).
Worked solution
Select two insulating materials, such as a plastic rod and a cloth. Check each is uncharged by bringing them close to small pieces of paper—no movement shows they are uncharged. Rub the rod and the cloth together for a few seconds. Test each again near the paper: attraction shows they are now charged.
