Question 43 of 122 in Properties of Waves

Describing waves

1 mark · Easy

Explain how you can tell whether a wave is transverse or longitudinal by observing the movement of particles in the medium.

Work this out on paper, then compare with the answer and worked solution below. With a free account you can submit written answers for marking.

Show answer

In a transverse wave, particles move at right angles to the direction the wave travels. In a longitudinal wave, particles move in the same direction as the wave.

Also accept: Transverse: vibrations at right angles; longitudinal: vibrations parallel

Common mistakes: Stating both move the same way; Not mentioning direction related to wave
