Question 214 of 279 in Solids, Liquids and Gases

Boyle's law

2 marks · Easy

Explain, using the particle model, why the pressure of a gas increases if it is compressed into a smaller volume at constant temperature.

Work this out on paper, then compare with the answer and worked solution below. With a free account you can submit written answers for marking.

Show answer

Common mistakes: Not mentioning collisions; Saying particles move faster with no temperature change

Marking points

M1 · 1 mark · States particles hit the walls or collide with container

M2 · 1 mark · Explains more frequent collisions or greater force per area

Worked solution

When the gas is compressed, there is less space, so gas particles hit the walls more often. This increased collision frequency increases the pressure.
