Marking points

M1 (a) · 1 mark · Proposes using a known magnet to test both ends of the object for attraction and repulsion.

A1 (a) · 1 mark · Specifies that repulsion (not just attraction) must be tested.

B1 (b) · 1 mark · Correctly states that repulsion would be observed if the object is a magnet.

Worked solution

a) Bring a known magnet close to both ends of the object and observe whether there is attraction or repulsion. b) If the object is a magnet, it will both attract and repel the known magnet (repulsion at like poles).
