MAGNETIC FIELDS
2 marks · EasyA student uses iron filings to show the magnetic field around a bar magnet. The filings form a dense pattern near the ends of the magnet and are more spread out in the centre.
Explain what this tells you about the magnetic field near the ends, compared to the centre of the magnet.

Marking points
B1 · 1 mark · Recognises that magnetic field is strongest at the ends (poles).
B2 · 1 mark · Explains that this is where field lines are closest together.
Worked solution
The magnetic field is strongest near the ends (poles) of the magnet. This is shown because the iron filings (or field lines) are closest together there. In the centre, the filings are further apart, showing the field is weaker.
