Question 84 of 293 in Magnetism and Electromagnetism

Magnetism and magnetic materials

2 marks · Easy

Describe two ways you can tell if a material is magnetic using a magnet in a classroom.

Work this out on paper, then compare with the answer and worked solution below. With a free account you can submit written answers for marking.

Show answer

1. The magnet attracts the material (the material sticks to the magnet). 2. The material can be magnetised temporarily when brought near a strong magnet.

Also accept: If the material is attracted to the magnet, it is magnetic.; If the material can be magnetised by rubbing it with a magnet, it is magnetic.

Common mistakes: Trying to pick up the magnet with the material.

Marking points

B1 · 1 mark · Gives any valid method for testing with a magnet (attraction).

B1 · 1 mark · Gives a second valid method (e.g. magnetisation by rubbing). Accept other reasonable methods.

Worked solution

Hold the material close to a magnet: if it is pulled toward the magnet, it is magnetic. Alternatively, rub the material with a magnet and see if it becomes temporarily magnetic (can pick up small iron filings).
