Show answer

If transformers were not used, electricity would be transmitted at low voltage and high current, causing large energy losses as heat, making transmission inefficient and unsafe for use in homes and businesses.

Also accept: There would be much more energy lost as heat and transmission would not be efficient

Common mistakes: It would be safer without transformers

Marking points

B1 · 1 mark · Explains that there would be large energy losses/inefficiency.

B2 · 1 mark · Explains that electricity would not be safe or suitable for home/business use.

Worked solution

Without transformers, electricity would need to be sent at low voltage which means high current. This would cause much more energy to be lost as heat in the wires, making transmission very inefficient. It also would not be safe for use in homes as voltage would not be at a suitable level.
