Question 4 of 10 in ENERGY IN TRANSFORMERS

ENERGY IN TRANSFORMERS

2 marks · Normal

Explain why it is important for a transformer to be as efficient as possible when transmitting electricity over long distances.

Work this out on paper, then compare with the answer and worked solution below. With a free account you can submit written answers for marking.

Show answer

Must show: Less energy wasted as heat, More electrical energy delivered to consumers/increased cost effectiveness

Also accept: Allows more power to reach the end user; Reduces need for expensive cooling or thicker wires

Common mistakes: Saying efficiency increases voltage with no explanation; Not relating to energy loss or transmission

Marking points

B1 · 1 mark · States that higher efficiency means less energy is wasted (e.g. as heat).

B2 · 1 mark · States that more energy reaches consumers/ it is more cost effective / less energy needs to be generated.

Worked solution

If a transformer is efficient, less energy is lost as heat during transmission, so more electrical energy reaches the consumers. This also reduces costs and environmental impact.
