Waves
4 marks · EasyThe diagram below shows both a light ray and a sound wave being used in communication and medical technology.
Name the type of wave (longitudinal or transverse) for each of the following:
| Wave | Type |
|---|---|
| Light wave | |
| Sound wave |
State one use of optical fibres and one use of sound waves in medicine.
Work this out on paper, then compare with the answer and worked solution below. With a free account you can submit written answers for marking.
Show answer
(a) — · must show Light wave: transverse, Sound wave: longitudinal
(b) Optical fibres: to see inside the body using an endoscope; Sound waves: for ultrasound scans or hearing tests. · must show One valid optical fibre use in medicine, One valid medical use of sound waves
Also accept: Optical fibres: endoscope, telecommunications, medical imaging; Sound waves in medicine: ultrasound, hearing tests, echocardiograms

Marking points
B1 (a) · 1 mark · Correctly identifies light wave as transverse
B2 (a) · 1 mark · Correctly identifies sound wave as longitudinal
B3 (b) · 1 mark · States one correct use of optical fibres in medicine (e.g. endoscope)
B4 (b) · 1 mark · States one correct use of sound waves in medicine (e.g. ultrasound scan)
Worked solution
| Wave | Type |
|---|---|
| Light wave | Transverse |
| Sound wave | Longitudinal |
Optical fibres can be used in endoscopes to let doctors see inside the body. Sound waves can be used in ultrasound scans for viewing organs or monitoring unborn babies.
